Yoko Miwa health update and Scullers Jazz Club 9/29
Happy to say I’m officially in the cancer survivor category! Back in May, I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. In July, I had successful lumpectomy surgery, I took the rest of the month off from performing to recover from surgery then as soon as it was August, I went back to performing. At the same time, I began radiation treatment and had 19 treatments over 4 weeks, luckily I tolerated the treatments well and didn’t experience any pain or the common fatigue most people get. I feel fortunate that throughout the entire process I was able to continue my life as a musician, keep exercising, eating, socializing, and trying to live as normal as usual. To be honest, the most difficult part was the mental anguish, at each turn there’s always another hypothetical situation which you have to learn to live with and hope for the best while trying to prepare for something less than ideal. As difficult as it was, I know it could have been much worse. I’m fortunate it didn’t spread to anywhere else in my body and that it was hormone receptive eliminating the need for chemotherapy. I posted about it on my social media back when I was diagnosed and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I received from friends, family, fans, and strangers alike. It warmed my heart to really feel other’s concern when I needed it most and for that I will remain forever grateful! I especially couldn’t believe how many people who were already close to me and confided with similar scenarios they had gone through or were currently going through and I now have even more respect for those who have been through this or are still fighting it. The positive thing is I’ve been reminded how precious life is and how we really need to enjoy it and live in the moment.
And speaking of that, my trio will be performing at Scullers Jazz Club on Friday, September 29 at 7PM. One set only! This is an annual event for us so it’s always a big deal but even bigger this year because I will be celebrating my clean bill of health. I hope you will join me to do so. There are still some tickets left but they are selling fast so get yours now, I hope to see you at Scullers and celebrate together in song and raise a toast to life!

Hi Yoko,
I’m sorry to hear that, but relieved that you are doing well. It’s always the great people that have to suffer so, but I will continue to pray for you and that life brings nothing but joy for you from now on. Be well, and be happy.
