Billie Holiday 101

Billie Holiday 101

OK, we admit it, the title of this post is a play on words. Lady Day would have been 101 on April 7, 2016. And here are some classic performances by one of the greatest of all jazz musicians.

My father got to meet her, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald way back when in the prime of their lives. He’s in his 80’s now and still never forgot it. He said they were the kindest people that you ever wanted to meet and what class they had. He said that seeing them in person was so much more impressive than just listening to their recordings as they were even better performing live if you can believe it.

Wow!!! We should get your Dad to come on my podcast and tell some of those stories John. – Yoko

    • John T. says:

When he was younger Yoko that would have been fun, but he is 81 now and when he tells stories he tends to have trouble remembering things he wants to say, so I don’t think that would be easy listening for your fans. He does better when he has time to just sit down and think it all through slowly, so maybe I’ll have him sit down and write it out and I’ll submit it to you and your website. This way when he forgets certain things I can jog his memory or he can slowly recall it.

It’s like you said on your podcast last week which is that my parents like yours are getting older. Have fun in Connecticut this weekend!

That would certainly be a treasure for you and many others if you had him write some of those stories out. I’d love to share them when you do 🙂
        Thanks John!

Thank you so much Yoko for these lovely clips of Billy Holiday. She was such a fine singer. What John says is so true.. Since I’ve regular contact with musicians on FaceBook my life is a kind of improved, All those folks are so friendly, to name Jihye Lee, Vivienne Aerts, Helen Sung, Kim Bomsori, Hiromi Uehara and you of course. Yes musicians have style, class and are really caring about their fans. Did you know Taylor Swift is answering every mail and letter from her fans? That’s amazing, don’t you think?

    • Yoko Miwa says:

Thank you for the comment Jos, you are too kind! I know Taylor goes above and beyond for her fans but I didn’t know she did that! Glad you enjoyed the clips of Billie 🙂
