Songs for sunny skies

Regular readers of the this blog know that I travel for work. I’m in Pittsburgh now and the weather is gorgeous. I don’t know about you, but this feels like it’s been a particularly long winter, so the sight of blue skies and fluffy clouds and sunshine really puts a spring (sorry) in my step. In honor of the weather, here are some songs that celebrate sunny skies and warm breezes. — Jason Crane

Ella Fitzgerald: “Blue Skies”
(music and lyrics: Irving Berlin)

Frank Sinatra: “Summer Wind”
(music: Heinz Meier / lyrics: Johnny Mercer)

Jeanne Crain: “It Might As Well Be Spring”
(music: Richard Rodgers / lyrics: Oscar Hammerstein II)

Nat King Cole Trio: “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”
(music: Jimmy McHugh / lyrics: Dorothy Fields – though some say Fats Waller wrote the song and then sold it)

  1. Oh God, I love them all, what great choices. My dad met Ella Fitzgerald, and said she was one of the nicest people that he has ever met, and called her just a beautiful person and soul.

I’m sorry, about Ryles Yoko, I wasn’t surprised when I read it, because slowly everything jazz has been chipped away at in this country, as it’s not just where you are in Boston. Sad to hear.

  2. Dear Yoko,
I am an old friend of Charlie Haden along with a very good friendship with Jay Mcshann and I also know SHEILA Jordan would not object to talking to me about both. One dear friend of mine once told me when I received a Christmas Card from Jay and his wife Mary Ann from Kansas City said “Gerard, That’s like getting Christmas Card from GOD!!! I would in some way or form like to meet with you and possibly Sheila and just talk…I live on Cape cod and am an old dude but if there is any possibility of getting together, that would be great…Charlie ALWAYS wanted me to talk to Pat Metheny and he told Pat about me but the issue at hand is if I can talk to you and/or Sheila???? Thank you! Gerard dombrowski
