Jazz on the Harbor

Jazz on the Harbor

Unless you only just discovered the Yoko Miwa Trio, you know they’ve won some awards, * but did you know that the performance center they will be playing on Friday, February 15 with special guest Rebecca Parris is award-winning, as well? Rockport Music’s Shalin Liu Perfomance Center has won awards for the venue and the programming from The Boston Globe and North Shore Magazine, and received the 2011 Honor Award from the Boston Society of Architects. This picture gives you an idea why:

When the Shalin Liu Performance Center opened in 2010, Rockport Music created a behind-the-scenes video about creating the venue. I recommend checking it out – the sweet, homegrown video shows Rockport Music’s true affection for the center, and includes a montage of the transformation from the historic Victorian exterior to the modern music hall. Larry Kirkegaard, the acoustician brought in for the building’s design, said, “You want not to hear the boats outside, or the cars on the street… you want absolutely sparkling clean windows of sound. No spots, no dots, no haze, no nothing that gets in the way of just being you and the music.”

It will be just you (and your friends, or your date) and the music on February 15, but buy your tickets soon. It’s an intimate venue, and more than half the seats are gone already.

*Best Jazz Act, the Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll 2012, and Live at Scullers Jazz Club was one of the Best CDs of 2011 in JazzTimes, to name a few.
