Yoko played another sold-out show at Scullers on Nov. 13 — her sixth straight year selling out the club. Thanks to Caroline Alden for these wonderful pictures. And thanks to everyone who came, including Boston jazz radio luminary Eric Jackson!
Looks like another successful evening. Yoko I sent you a message earlier in the week, but I wanted to make sure that I publicize this. You and Scott, especially, should see the movie “Whiplash” that I think is playing in Cambridge right now, and I think is one of the finest movies on the world of jazz that I have ever seen. I think that it would be interesting to hear your take on the teaching aspect of the film as far as jazz instruction at schools like yours, and Scott’s take as a professional drummer on if he thought the film presented the life of a jazz drummer realistically, or if there was too much “Hollywood” melodrama in it. You should both put blogs up on this page after you see the movie. Some have said that the things that occurred in the film could never happen, but the writer/director has said that he based the film on true events that he and others went through at schools like yours and Julliard.
It was a successful evening. Thank you for your message John! I want to see the movie but haven’t had a chance yet, Scott is also interested. I’ve only seen the trailer and read this movie review a lot of jazz musicians were sharing, it’s obviously written by a jazz musician. I don’t know if this is how I’ll feel after watching the movie but found the review humorous. What’s your take on the review after already seeing the movie?
Your style is really unique in comparison to other folks
