Celebrating The Birthdays Of Some Major Musicians

Regattabar

This time of the year contains the birthdays of some major musicians. Let’s listen to performances by several of them.

Julian “Cannonball” Adderly (15 September 1928) — He came to prominence with Miles Davis and remained a leading figure in jazz as the driving force behind some fabulous combos with his brother Nat. It’s hard to choose just one performance, but here’s Cannonball playing “Little Boy With The Sad Eyes” from the album Radio Nights:

B.B. King (16 September 1925) — What can you say about this giant of the blues that hasn’t been said already? Let’s let the man himself do the talking. Here’s BB playing “Go Underground” from Indianola Mississippi Seeds:

Steve Coleman (20 September 1956) — Finally we pay tribute to a musician who’s still with us. Saxophone and musical explorer Steve Coleman turns 59 this month. Here’s Steve and The Council Of Balance playing “Synovial Joints.”
