Jazz Takes Many Forms

There are so many creative ways to interpret the word “jazz.” From free improv to swinging standards to fusion and more. Here are a few videos that showcase interesting approaches to this music we all love.

First up is this incredible performance by Carnatic music singer Varijashree Venugopal. After she was told to study Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” if she wanted to understand jazz, she went deep inside the song and eventually recorded this:

MonoNeon is the stage name of bassist Dwayne Thomas, Jr. He’s worked with Prince and Ne-Yo, among others, and his popular YouTube channel features many collaborations like this one with drummer Dan Weiss.

Finally, settle in for this performance by the John McLaughlin Trio with Kai Eckhardt and Trilok Gurtu. This video is packed with virtuosity and musicianship, and it covers a lot of ground musically, too.
