When you commit yourself to being a musician, you commit to the ups and downs that come with it. There’s some real highs and there can be some deep lows. To receive reaffirming words from a music legend who has been such an inspiration makes me feel as though I’ve already reached my goal even though I always feel there’s so much more I want to achieve. Thank you Ahmad Jamal from the bottom of my heart! I will treasure these words for a lifetime.

Here’s the full quote: “At 90 years + , I have known and heard most of the great pianists from Art Tatum, Oscar Denard, Phineas Newborn, Nat Cole, Dodo Marmarosa, Johnny Costa, Erroll Garner, and on and on. These are just a few of the American Classical pianists that I have heard and known, not to mention the pianists performing The European Classical works that I have followed as well. In Pittsburgh where I was born, and where some of the aforementioned are also from, we had to study both American Classical Music as well as the European Classical forms. Yoko Miwa is the result of both worlds. She is amazing and will continue to grow. Much determines an artist’s growth by their spirit and attitude. Yoko Miwa has been gifted with both extraordinary musical skills and has the pure spirit that is necessary for great art. We love her musical gifts and her beautiful spirit as well.” -Ahmad Jamal

Not much joy today as Chick Corea died yesterday, at the age of 79. I think I told you Yoko, as I tell everybody, that I grew up with his parents as they lived on my street, and I lugged around Chick’s old furniture around the country – everything from his bed, to his couch pillows and coverings, to his chairs. He was unbelievably talented, and he had a dream which he made happen. It may seem old to people who are younger, but 79 is way too early to pass away. He was a great of the likes we will never see again. A truly magnificent generation is leaving this world.

Hi John, I’m sorry John I’m also shocked and saddened. I totally agree with you, it’s too young to die. I still can’t believe he is gone. I think all jazz musicians studied Chick’s music and we have to carry on his legacy to next generation. He will be missed deeply. Best, Yoko
